Man sought after Christchurch attack

An assault on an elderly couple in Christchurch yesterday has prompted an investigation by police who are seeking a 59-year-old who they believe has "vital information".

A man, 72, and a woman, 80, suffered serious injuries in the assault in St Martins yesterday afternoon.

The couple remain in hospital in a stable condition but have been significantly traumatised by the incident and receiving support from family and friends, said Detective Sergeant Michael Ford.

Police are seeking Christchurch man Douglas James Archer, 59, in relation to the attack, saying they believe he has key information.

He is described as a male European, 175cm tall, and of thin build.

Mr Archer is believed to be travelling in a 1996 Honda Accord LXI sedan, with the registration UJ7255.

He should not to be approached, said Mr Ford.
