Two of four teenage girls involved in a crash during a police
pursuit late on Sunday remain in a critical condition in
Auckland City Hospital.
The other two teenagers are in a stable condition following
the crash into a concrete block wall during a police pursuit.
The girls, two aged 16 and two aged 17, had to be cut from
the stolen car after it crashed into the 2m-high wall with
such force that the impact shook neighbouring houses on Kepa
Rd in Kohimarama.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority is investigating the
actions of officers involved in the one-minute pursuit.
The girls were allegedly fighting and knocking over tables at
a Mission Bay cafe before police located them in the stolen
car and pursued them for one minute before the crash.
A spike strip had been set up further along Kepa Rd but the
fleeing car crashed beforehand when it lost control after
hitting a concrete median strip.
Senior police have said they are "comfortable" with the
actions of officers involved in the short pursuit.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority confirmed this
morning that it had received a complaint about the incident
and an investigation had been launched.
