Young mother killed in crash

A Kaiapoi woman who was killed when her car crashed into a concrete power pole at the weekend leaves a little boy who has just turned 4.

Police said Alana Elizabeth Adams, 29, lost control of her car in loose gravel amid road works on Flaxton Rd as she was returning home about 4am on Sunday.

Senior Sergeant Malcolm Johnston said Ms Adams died at the crash site after hitting the pole.

The impact sheered off the pole at its base and Ms Adams' car burst into flames.

The road works were clearly marked, with a speed limit of 60kmh in what was normally a 100kmh area.

Senior Sergeant Johnston said the police serious crash unit was investigating whether speed or alcohol was involved and the death had been referred to the coroner.

He urged motorists to "exercise extreme care" around road works.

Ms Adams' stepfather, Toby Skevington, said she lived on a lifestyle block near Kaiapoi with her partner, Hamish, and son Kashius, whose birthday was on Monday.

Mr Skevington, who runs the Anglers Arms Tavern at Sefton with wife Jacquie, Ms Adams' mother, said the family was "pretty gutted" by the tragedy.

Ms Adams had been at the tavern earlier in the day before visiting friends in the area and leaving for home, he said.
