A wheelchair-bound man has died in a house fire in Napier
this morning.
A Fire Service spokeswoman said crews were called to the
blaze at a two-bedroom flat on Riverbend Road about 5.08am.
The house was "well involved" in fire on arrival.
Four fire trucks were called to the scene and the fire has
now been extinguished.
Napier Stations Officer Peter Draper said fire crews jumped
straight into action on arrival.
"There was a gentleman that was wheelchair-bound in the
building, so the brigade immediately attempted a rescue,
while doing fire knock-down at the same time."
Mr Draper said they found the man in the living room.
It is not believed anyone else was in the address at the time
of the blaze.
Fire safety officers are investigating.
