Tourists injured when tree falls on road

Two tourists suffered suspected spinal injuries and a third received minor injuries when a large tree fell across the road and hit their car near Murchison in the Buller Gorge this afternoon.

The car was travelling north when the tree fell, in a "natural event" and hit the side of the vehicle about 3.30pm, said a Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter spokesman.

Two women from Sweden and Germany, aged 20 and 27, with suspected spinal injuries and a man from Sweden, 21, with minor injuries were flown to Nelson Hospital.
