A man died in a van fire in Wellsford, north of Auckland early today.
Northern fire communications shift manager Colin Underdown said fire crews were called to the parked van in an alley behind Rodney St just before 5am and were not treating the incident as suspicious at this stage.
Shopkeepers in the area said they had not heard or seen anything related to the fire and knew about it only from media reports. Fire officers found the body in the vehicle, Mr Underdown said.
Fire investigation officers and police have launched an inquiry into the blaze.
