Hondas recalled over faulty airbags

About 900 Honda Civics sold in New Zealand are being recalled because of concerns about faulty airbags.

The vehicles were sold between 2001 and 2003 and Honda NZ is already contacting buyers, a spokesman said.

The move is part of a global recall of almost 3 million Japanese-made vehicles.

Toyota expects to recall more than 1.7 million vehicles, Honda more than 1.1 million, Nissan about 480,000 and Mazda more than 45,000.

The manufacturers said the vehicles' front passenger airbag could deploy abnormally in the event of a crash.

The airbags were made by the Tokyo-based Takata Corporation.

New Zealand branches of the other manufacturers were not immediately available for comment.
