Wild weather eases around Nelson

The subtropical weather system which brought torrential rain to the Nelson region has abated and been replaced by much more pedestrian weather, MetService says.

The Nelson-Tasman district has had some of the highest rain levels on record, flooding roads and homes, causing slips, bringing down power lines and contaminating water.

There had been no rain in Nelson overnight, and only 1-2mm in the ranges.

MetService meteorologist Marylin Avery said the subtropical trough which brought the rain had now passed over the country, which was now experiencing much more typical weather.

"We're into a typical nor'-west flow now. They'll just get showers in the ranges around Nelson. There might be one or two thunderstorms in the ranges, with one or two maybe moving towards the city, but it's pretty typical."

It was a similar story for the rest of the country, with scattered showers in the west and northwest of the South Island, but mostly fine in the east.

The deep South would also receive some rain.

MetService lifted heavy rain warnings in Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Nelson and northern Marlborough yesterday after the downpour damaged more than 100 businesses and homes in Stoke, Richmond and Hope.
