Car hits house after police pursuit

A young child has been taken to hospital after being injured when a car being chased by police crashed into a house in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden this morning.

Police Northern Communications spokesman Inspector Kerry Watson said the car slammed into the house on Mewburn Rd about 3am.

Police said they started pursuing the car when it was seen "travelling an excessive speed on Dominion Road, Mt Eden" about one minute earlier.

"Our patrol signalled the vehicle to stop, it failed to comply and travelled into a side street at speed," police said in a statement.

"The patrol lost sight of it but shortly afterwards found that it had crashed into a house."

It crashed into a room where a young couple and an infant were sleeping.

"The infant received minor injuries and was taken to hospital for observation purposes," police said.

The driver was also hospitalised and faces charges of dangerous driving causing injury and failing to stop for police.

A blood sample was also taken to determine if he had been consuming alcohol.

Officers from the serious crash unit have completed a scene examination at Mewburn Rd this morning.

Police said the pursuit lasted less than one minute before the crash.
