Flyers sent out to catch cat killers

An international campaign has raised more than $2000 to catch Whangarei's cat killers.

The money was raised in an online campaign by the Cats to Stay Army, a worldwide coalition of cat groups, as well as donations collected in Whangarei by Cats to Stay member Jean Williams.

A flyer advertising the reward will be distributed today in the Silverstream, Puriri Park Rd and Tui Cres areas, where several cat shootings took place in February and March. Mrs Williams will be helped by the three teenage owners of Fred, a cat who had to have a leg amputated after it was shot with a slug gun.

Close to $2500 was raised. The reward for information leading to the offenders' identification is $2000; the balance of the money was used to print the 1000 flyers with any leftover funds going to the SPCA or future cat campaigns. Reactions to the campaign had been supportive, Mrs Williams said. Many of the online donations came from cat lovers in the UK and US.

The campaign was sparked by the February 28 shooting of Gingy, a cat belonging to the Quinn family of Maunu. The flyer urges anyone with information to call Whangarei police on (09) 430 4500.
