Car crushed between two buses

A car was crushed between two buses in Birkenhead this morning and an eyewitness said it was amazing nobody was badly hurt.

The crash happened about 11.20am near the main bus stop in Birkenhead's town centre.

The driver and passenger of the silver Hyundai had minor injuries.

Police said the road would be closed until about 1pm and diversions had been put in place.

In another incident at 10.30am, five people were injured, including one person who was trapped in a car, after a two-car crash near Drury, south Auckland.

The fire service was able to free the person from the vehicle, northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said.

Two people were seriously injured and three had minor injuries when the two cars collided on Waihoehoe Road.

St John said the five people were taken to Middlemore Hospital shortly afterwards.
