A search for a kite-surfer thought to have blown out to sea have been called off after nobody was reported missing, police say.
A search was launched off Taranaki's Waitara Beach shortly after 3pm yesterday after a report of a person being blown offshore.
The search was called off last night.
Senior Constable Jeff McGrath said it appeared that only a kite of "significant size" was seen floating out to sea, but nobody was attached to it.
"Fortunately we've had nobody reported to us missing or overdue."
