House under guard after two hurt in fire

A Hamilton house was under police guard this morning after a fire that injured two people, one seriously.

Emergency services were called to the house fire in the suburb of Bader shortly before 5am after neighbours rang 111 and said they could hear screams coming from inside the blazing property.

By the time police and the Fire Service arrived, the two occupants had made their way out of the house.

A female suffered serious burns and another suffered smoke inhalation.

Both were taken to Waikato Hospital. They were believed to be the only occupants of the house.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated the fire was not suspicious but the scene would remain under police guard this morning to allow more detailed analysis to be carried out.

Fire fighters would remain at the scene to continue dampening down the house which suffered significant damage.
