A tramper is missing in freezing conditions north of Wellington.
Police said the 22-year-old Upper Hutt man was looking for his dog in Tararua Forest Park where it had gone missing on the weekend.
There was heavy snow in the area and police were concerned for his safety.
"He is believed to be well equipped, but not for an overnight stay in an alpine environment."
The man had walked to a high point called Angle Knob, near Jumbo Hut, at the headwaters of the Atiwhakatu River.
Police were concerned he may have left one of the main walking routes to look for the dog.
A helicopter had been deployed to look for him.
