Canterbury cannabis factory uncovered

A cannabis factory has been uncovered after a visitor to a Canterbury property fell ill from the strong smell of the marijuana plants.

Police received a call yesterday from an unnamed person who said they weren't feeling well after visiting a house in Rakaia.

Suspecting something illegal, police called in back-up from Christchurch, Timaru, Selwyn and Ashburton district to assist them.

After entering the house, officers discovered a cannabis cultivation operation and arrested two people.

The pair, aged 25 and 26, are now before the courts.

The caller who was affected by the "intense smell" of the cannabis plants required medical attention, Sergeant Janine Bowden of Ashburton police said.
