A man has appeared in court over the alleged shooting of another man in the Auckland suburb of Orakei.
Marcellus Leroy Cook, 26, appeared before the Auckland District Court this afternoon charged with discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Allan McCaw.
In a brief court appearance, Cook, a scaffolder, was remanded in custody and will appear before court again on Thursday.
Mr McCaw is recovering in Auckland City Hospital after allegedly being shot in the head on Sunday afternoon.
He is in a stable condition, a DHB spokesman said. It is not yet known when he will be discharged.
While surviving a gunshot to the head at close range sounds extraordinary, police say it is not uncommon for people to walk away from shooting incidents with only minor injuries.
Inspector Andy Brill said such cases are "not rare at all".
"Gun shots don't always kill, by any means," he said. "It depends on [whether the shot is] head on or a glancing blow, depends on the direction of the round, whether from a BB gun or anything else.
"If it hits with a glancing blow it can quite commonly bounce off. It depends on how the round strikes you."
