Owners devastated after childcare centre destroyed

The owners of a recently opened North Shore childcare centre are devastated after the building was set alight early today.

Specialist fire investigator Lynda McHugh said it appeared intruders broke a door at the Natural Steps Early Childhood Centre on Apollo Drive, Albany, and set it alight sometime before 3.20am.

Initial inquiries suggested an accelerant had been used to start the fire, which destroyed the front section of the building.

It did not appear anything was stolen.

Ms McHugh said the childcare centre had only recently opened.

"The owners are extremely devastated," she said.

Fourteen fire appliances attended the blaze and it was contained within an hour.

The fire was not thought to be related to a spate of suspicious fires around Dairy Flat in recent weeks.

Anyone with information was urged to contact North Shore police on (09) 477 5000.
