Fog delays Auckland flights

Fog in Auckland has cancelled or delayed regional flights, but the main domestic routes and international flights have not affected.

The fog settled this morning in Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato, including centres like Rotorua and Taupo, but had not affected centres further south in the North Island.

Auckland Airport said nine regional flight arrivals were cancelled and five were delayed. Eight regional flight departures were cancelled and nine delayed.

None of the main domestic routes or international flights had been affected by the fog.

MetService duty forecaster Leigh Matheson said the fog in Auckland was "quite thin" and the sky was visible, so it would not take long to clear this morning.

"It's usually just as the day breaks and you get the warming from the sun - that tends to dissipate it.

"Places further south, around Waikato ... that tends to take a little bit longer to clear. It may actually linger as low cloud until the afternoon before it breaks away."

There was also some thin and patchy fog in Dunedin but that was likely to dissipate by 9am, Ms Matheson said.
