Police are investigating an apparent drowning at Whareponga
Beach, 10km from Ruatoria on Saturday.
The body of a 41-year-old man was found on the beach on
"The body of the man has been sent for a post-mortem
examination to ascertain the exact cause of death," a
Ruatoria police spokesman said this morning.
"The death is not being treated as suspicious."
Police have described it as a tragic accident.
"The victim, who was a Ruatoria resident, was at the beach
diving for seafood when the incident occurred," the spokesman
St John Ambulance, the local fire brigade and police
"Attempts were made to resuscitate the man but he could not
be revived. He was pronounced deceased at the beach."
The death has been referred to the Coroner.
