Ruatoria police have released the name of the diver who died
while gathering seafood at Whareponga Beach near Ruatoria on
the East Coast on Saturday.
He was 41-year-old Owen George Takarua, of Ruatoria.
Police said Mr Takarua was found on the beach by his partner
and she sent someone to raise the alarm.
"One of the children ran a kilometre and a half to the
Whareponga village to get help."
Efforts were made to revive Mr Takarua at the beach but he
did not respond.
Police, the fire service and St John Ambulance attended.
It is believed he might have suffered from a medical
condition while diving.
A post-mortem has been conducted on Mr Takarua to determine
the exact cause of death.
