A Western Bay of Plenty home has burned to the ground after
an armed police callout.
The occupant of the property in Ruahihi Rd, off State Highway
29, was taken to Tauranga Hospital for treatment after the
Police said the 41-year-old man, who was armed, was
unco-operative and was taken into custody as firefighters
worked to control the fire, which began about 4.30pm.
The man, who suffered burns and cuts, was taken to Tauranga
Hospital last night.
A Bay of Plenty Times reporter at the scene said it appeared
the house had collapsed and a car on the property had also
A crowd gathered at the scene and firefighters initially
warned onlookers to move back over fears an LPG cylinder at
the house could explode.
Police cordons were put in place at the intersection of
Ruahihi Rd and State Highway 29.
