A Christchurch truck driver who followed an 8-year-old girl
to her country home has admitted trying to have sex with her
while she was alone in the house.
The horrific incident last December sent shock waves through
the small North Canterbury township where it happened.
It had its sequel in the district court on Friday when the
49-year-old driver, a father of one, pleaded guilty to
attempted sexual violation and having child pornography on
One resident told The Star she thought it was "sickening".
"We're not used to that up here. It's not like in the city,"
The woman said the incident was the "talk of the town" among
residents shortly after it happened.
"But not everyone knew about it and we tried to keep it
She described the victim as "a bubbly wee girl" who had been
traumatised by the incident.
"She was very upset at the time."
The woman said the driver, who had visited the area regularly
on his delivery run around Canterbury, "hadn't been seen

According to the police summary of facts, he met the child by
chance on December 6. He'd parked his truck outside the local
store and struck up a conversation with her.
She refused his invitation to go for a ride in his truck. She
had a scooter with her and scooted off home.
He followed her and went inside the house despite knowing the
girl's caregivers were absent and she was alone.
Police said the victim showed the man around the house,
including her upstairs bedroom.
Once inside the girl's bedroom he pushed her onto the bed,
knelt down on the floor in front of her and pulled her
clothing down before attempting sexual connection.
She said "no" and stood up crying. He tried to calm her down,
but she told him never to come to her house again.

Interviewed by police, the man admitted going to the girl's
house but claimed he went there to get permission from her
caregivers to take her for a ride in his truck. He thought
she was "6 or 7".
He denied going to the girl's bedroom and denied any sexual
assault. He said she'd become hysterical and began crying
when he told her he would have to tell her caregivers he had
been at the address.

violation and a representative charge of possessing
objectionable material. His computer has been seized.
He was granted interim name suppression and remanded on bail
for sentence in December.
A local publican said he'd only heard about the incident in
the last few weeks.
"It's not good is it. Society takes a dim view of that sort
He believed the man should be jailed.
"He's a danger to society, isn't he."
