A pedestrian has been struck and killed by a train in the
Auckland suburb of Takanini.
A northern police shift inspector confirmed the reports and
said more information will be released A KiwiRail spokeswoman
said the incident was close to a level crossing.
Auckland Transported tweeted that the Southern Line was
currently closed between Homai and Papakura due to an
"Railbuses are being arranged between Papakura and Homai due
to emergency incident. Rail tickets will also be accepted on
normal bus services".
Police issued a brief statement saying "At midday today, at
the Walters road train crossing Takanini, a pedestrian has
been struck by a train and has subsequently died from
"Police and emergency services are presently on scene. Train
schedules will be affected by this incident. No further
information is available at this time."
KiwiRail spokeswoman Jenny Austin confirmed there had been a
fatality and said the victim was believed to be male.
"It was a north-bound commuter train heading from Papakura up
to Britomart. It was driven by one of our KiwiRail drivers."
The fatal collision occurred some way up the track from the
Walters Rd level crossing, Ms Austin said.
"This is an area where we do have reasonably high levels of
KiwiRail was supporting the driver, who would be stood down
from driving for a minimum of three days and offered
counselling, she said.
