West Coast police have scaled back their search for missing
French tramper Yohan Simon and believe he has managed to get
out of the bush on his own.
The 32-year-old was dropped off at the Karamea Bluff on Happy
Valley Saddle on Friday, October 18, and was to be collected
by a friend the following Monday.
He was reportedly sighted at a hut in the Little Wanganui
area so a helicopter was sent to look for him there yesterday
but found no trace.
Police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said they had scaled back the
search pending new information
"The person in charge of the search is comfortable that
they've thoroughly searched the area where they thought he
should be and they're of the opinion that he may well have
walked out of the area and done his own thing and not
bothered to tell anybody.
"Until we hear more information or something sends us in a
particular direction there's really nothing more we can do."
He has light brown dreadlocks and is carrying a backpack.
