trainee primary school teacher bashed in downtown Auckland
Tarun Asthana, 25, had been on life support in Auckland City
Hospital ever since the attack early on Saturday morning.
He sustained a serious head injury when he fell on to the
pavement after being punched in the face.
Mr Asthana's father arrived in Auckland late last night and
was able to say goodbye to his son this morning before the
machines keeping him alive were turned off.
His mother, Yvette D'Souza, has kept a vigil at his bedside
and has been praying for a miracle.
A 27-year-old man has today appeared in court in connection
with the attack.
Grenville David McFarland appeared before the Auckland
District Court on a charge of assault.
He did not enter a plea and was remanded on bail until
Police said more serious charges were likely.
Judge David Cameron denied an application from defence
counsel John Corby for interim name suppression.
