Body found after Kaikoura boat capsize

The body of a man has been found by searchers on the shoreline near Kaikoura after a boat capsized this morning.

A second man believed to have been on the boat has not been located, police said.

A search began after a member of the public raised the alarm after seeing the boat at 9am off Atia Point, near South Bay.

The stern of the boat was floating with its bow submerged in the water.

Police, Coastguard and search and rescue volunteers are still search for the remaining crew member from the boat, believed to be a male.

The man whose body has been recovered was wearing a lifejacket, police said.

The vessel has been towed to shore.

Tasman police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said the men may have been retrieving cray pots or some kind of recreational fishing.

The police dive squad were also being called in to assist with the search.
