Search to resume for missing fisherman

The search for a 79-year-old fisherman off the Kaikoura coast is set to resume this morning.

The body of his 74-year-old companion was found yesterday, within hours of their boat capsizing.

The two men had intended to check crayfish pots and set off at 7am in a 16-foot boat. Around 8.15am it was found semi-submerged in Whaler's Bay.

The dead man was found on the shoreline about 200 metres from the vessel. He was wearing a lifejacket but it had not been inflated, police said.

The boat was towed to shore yesterday afternoon and would be examined by police investigators and Maritime New Zealand.

A police spokesman said at 8.30pm that the search would be called off for the night and would resume about 6am today.

The operation had so far involved more than 20 people, boats, a plane and a helicopter. The police dive squad was expected to join the search.
