Attempted abduction in Washdyke

A 13-year-old girl was dragged off her bicycle and into some bush by an unknown man in Washdyke, near Timaru, last night, police say.

The attempted abduction was stopped by a nearby resident who saw the attack and went to the girl's aid.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill said the girl had been riding her bike on State Highway 8 near Sir Basil Arthur Park when she was approached by the man.

A short time later he dragged her off her bike, across a fence and into an area of bush.

A witness from a nearby address came to her aid and the man fled on foot.

A police dog team was not able to find him but police were following "positive lines of enquiry".

Anyone with information about what occurred was urged to contact Timaru Police on (03) 687 9808 as soon as possible.
