Charges laid after workplace death

Charges have been laid in relation to the death of a Hawkes Bay man at a building site after he was struck by a steel beam earlier this year.

Jeffrey McCulloch, 53, had been a foreman on the site of the old Farmers building in Napier when he was hit by the beam and was unable to be resuscitated in May.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and police had the area cordoned off while they carried out a scene examination.

Today it was confirmed charges had been laid but a spokesperson for the Ministry would not comment on who has been charged or what the charges are.

The charges have been laid under the Health and Safety in Employment Act.

The first appearance will be on December 11 in Napier District Court.
