Three injured in Waikato crash

Three people were injured and one of them helicoptered to hospital following a serious road collision in the Waikato this afternoon.

State Highway 29 was blocked for 90 minutes after the two-vehicle crash, which happened approximately 400 meters east of the SH28 and SH29 intersection. Traffic was stopped from driving over the Kaimai Ranges to and from Tauranga to the Waikato.

Senior Sergeant Dave Litton of the Waikato police said a vehicle heading east down the Kaimai's had crossed the centre line in wet road conditions.

"A second vehicle was heading in the opposite direction and in the unfortunate position of overtaking a truck at the time of the collision," he added.

"With a record low road toll of 18 deaths in the Waikato at this time, this is a timely reminder to drive to the conditions and respect the road."

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
