Man fights for life after Auckland stabbing

A man has been arrested following a serious assault which left a man fighting for his life in Auckland overnight.

The 30-year-old man was found lying unconscious in the street with what was initially thought to be stab wounds to the head, however police now say his injuries indicate he was hit over the head with a heavy object.

A 21-year-old man was arrested this morning and charged over the attack on Rollerson Street in Papakura, which is thought to have broken out during a fight over a house party.

Officers were called to the address around 8pm last night, after receiving reports of a group of people fighting with knives, sticks and rocks.

It is believed a brawl broke out between a group who were holding a party and people from a neighbouring address, Counties Manukau police said.

An earlier police statement said officers found around 11 people at the scene when they arrived.

The injured man was found lying on the street, and has since undergone surgery at Auckland Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The 21-year-old has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and will appear in Papakura District Court tomorrow.

A number of people who witnessed the fight are being questioned by police, but officers believe there may have been others in the area at the time and are appealing for them to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call Counties Manukau Police on 09 295 0200, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
