$8.6m Big Wednesday win

A central North Island couple have scooped $8.6 million in lotto winnings this week.

The Turangi couple, who wish to remain anonymous, won both the first and second division prizes in the Big Wednesday draw after purchasing tickets from the lotto outlet at the Turangi Civic Video.

The couple, who describe themselves as proud Turangi locals, said they were overjoyed at the win, and were looking forward to contributing some money to their community.

"When I checked the tickets in-store, one said 'Second Division' and the other said 'First Division'. I just started shaking and could barely breathe," the winning woman said.

"When I told my partner he was so flustered, he just keep wandering around saying 'oh no, oh no, oh no' - he was excited, but it just couldn't sink in. Now we're both just saying 'oh yes!' " the woman said.

The couple, who are yet to decide exactly how to spend their winnings, said winning lotto had always been a popular topic of conversation.

"We're just so happy and amazed. Most weeks we talk about what we'd do if we won Lotto - and now we have.

"I don't know how our lives are going to change because of this win, but for now we feel so fortunate and blessed."

Giving something back to the community, who were "like family" to the couple, was on the list, she said.

Meanwhile, another large prize has been won from a store in Mount Maunganui. Lotto confirmed yesterday a $1 million first division winning ticket for this weekend had been purchased from the Bayfair Lotto store. The ticket is yet to be claimed.
