Woman kidnapped in Tauranga

Sightings of a car involved in an aggravated burglary and kidnap are being sought by police.

The incident occurred in the early hours of this morning in the Maungatapu area of Tauranga during a domestic dispute.

A man is alleged to have forced a woman to leave a house and tried to force her into his car around 3am, police said.

A member of the public heard the commotion and shouted that he was phoning police. It created a distraction in which the woman managed to break free. The man then left the area in a Honda Odyssey.

A 38-year-old Tokoroa man was arrested a short time later in Te Puke.

He has been charged with kidnap, aggravated burglary, assault with intent to injure, breach of a protection order, wilful damage and driving while disqualified. He is now in custody and will appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow.

The victim, who is aged in her 30s, suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Anyone who saw a grey Honda Odyssey in the Maungatapu area, particularly around Maungatapu Road, any time yesterday or in the early hours of this morning is asked to contact police.
