Youths questioned over fatal fire

Three youths seen before a fatal house fire in the Wellington region are being sought for questioning by police.

One man died on Sunday night after a fire broke out in a block of flats in Trentham, Upper Hutt.

Wellington police spokesman Nick Bohm said three youths were seen by residents in the neighbourhood before the blaze occurred.

"We hope they will come forward and talk to police so we can talk to them about any information that they may have," he said.

No one else was injured in the fire, which was contained to a single unit in the block of four flats.

Mr Bohm said fire investigators were returning to the scene of the fire today, after failing to establish its cause yesterday.

Meanwhile, a fire at another Upper Hutt home last night did not appear to be related to the Sunday night blaze, Mr Bohm said.

Fire fighters were called to the Elderslea home about 11pm.

When they arrived, one room of the single-level house was ablaze.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said the blaze was contained to the room, and there were no reports of any injuries.
