Nelson man charged over spade attack

A Nelson man has been arrested and charged with hitting another man over the head with a spade.

The assault took place during a fight in the early hours of last Friday on New St in the city.

A 34-year-old man has now been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and theft, police said today.

He will appear in Nelson District Court on January 6.

The victim, who has not been named, has been released from hospital after being treated for a large wound to his head.

However, police are still keen to talk to anyone who witnessed the incident, and have asked people to contact them on 03 546 3840 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
