Hamilton man shot with airgun

Police are still searching for at least two people after shots from an airgun and a paintball gun were fired at members of the public in Hamilton yesterday.

The incidents happened in the Claudelands area about 7pm, Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering said.

In the first incident a woman who had been visiting her grandmother was about to get into her car which was parked in a driveway, when a paintball gun was fired at them from a passing vehicle.

"It just missed her and just missed hitting the 71-year-old lady," Mr van de Wetering said.

The woman saw a white, older model sedan driving from the scene.

Just minutes later and a short distance away, an air rifle was fired from a passing car at a man standing outside Pizza Hutt.

He was shot in the back and suffered a minor injury, Mr van de Wetering said.

Police believed the same shooters were involved in both incidents.

"It's very suspicious ... the localities are very close to each other and the timeframes are within minutes.

"I think it's pretty safe to draw a strong inference that it's the same people," Mr van de Wetering said.

"Luckily there was no serious injury in either case this time but if these individuals are going to carry on like this then that would be something to worry about.

"It is unfortunate such behaviour occurred on an evening when people should be celebrating Christmas."
