Arrest after Mataura domestic

A 24-year-old man has been arrested by armed police after a "potentially serious" domestic incident in rural Southland.

Police said they were called to a farmhouse about 7km west of Mataura, near Gore, about 7.30am today.

The area around the farmhouse was cordoned off until it was cleared by the police Armed Offenders Squad at 10.30am.

Southern District police deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Brian Benn described the situation as a "potentially serious family violence incident".

"No one has been injured and the cordons have been lifted," he said.

A man was arrested and charged with making threats towards a woman who lives at the address.
