Motueka shooting accidental - police

A man who was shot in Motueka early yesterday will be summonsed for unlawful possession of a firearm, police say.

The 23-year-old was admitted to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition after being shot in the stomach around 4am.

It was believed the weapon was a .22 rifle.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called to a house in Pah St, and officers cordoned off the area and entered the property where they found a man with gunshot wounds. A rifle was recovered.

Police have now completed the investigation, which has confirmed the incident was an accidental shooting.

The injured man is still recovering in Nelson hospital and police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
