Woman survives being washed off rocks

A Wellington woman suffered moderate injuries when she was washed off the rocks at Castlepoint in coastal Wairarapa this afternoon.

The woman in her 40s, who was on holiday in the area, had been walking along the rocks with family members when she was washed into the sea by a wave about 1.45pm.

Westpac rescue helicopter crewman Colin Larsen, of the Life Flight Trust, said the woman was swept off the rocks in an area often used by fishermen.

"After being washed on and off the rocks by the surge two to three times she was able to scramble out of the water, with assistance from family and bystanders," he said.

"It was fortunate that she did not sustain more severe injuries."

Off-duty paramedics helped treat the woman until an ambulance crew from Masterton and the rescue helicopter arrived.

The woman was flown to Wellington hospital with moderate injuries.
