Body found on walking track

A body has been found on a Coromandel walking track, police say.

Northern communications centre shift inspector Lou Alofa said the body of a man was found by a tramper in Coromandel Forest Park.

He said a St John team had got to the scene and confirmed the man was deceased.

A search and rescue team had now been activated and would try to recover the body from the walking track off Puketui Valley Rd, south of Taiura.

Mr Alofa said it may be risky to stretcher the body out from the remote location, so the Westpac Rescue Helicopter may be needed.

"We're in contact with Westpac and our people are just going through the steps of setting out a possible place where the helicopter could land and we'll take it from there."

He said it wasn't known whether anyone had been reported missing or overdue in the area, but police would be looking into that as part of the inquiry.
