Emergency services are carrying out a search at Kauri Point, north of Katikati, for a man who they suspect has drowned while fishing.
Police told the Bay of Plenty Times the man, in his mid-30s, jumped off the wharf to try to retrieve his fishing rod, which had been pulled into the water after hooking a stingray.
