Fears for missing kayakers

Two kayakers are missing after setting out from Sumner, Christchurch yesterday morning.

Police said two men, aged 46 and 17, took their kayak to Sumner to go kayaking some time after 10.45am and failed to return.

Their stationwagon had been found still parked at the Sumner lifeboat park.

A search has begun for the pair, with police saying they were extremely concerned for their safety.

The kayak was described as a red and orange Malibu two-person sit-on kayak.

The men were both wearing three-quarter length wetsuits. One was wearing a yellow lifejacket and the other a red lifejacket.

Police appealed to boat operators to keep a look out around the Sumner, Lyttelton area of Banks Peninsula.

Anyone with any information was asked to call police or Search and Rescue co-ordinator Logan Penrose on 03 9725917.
