The discovery of a man's body on a rural Taupo road has yet to be explained.
The man, believed to be in his 60s, was discovered by a member of the public about 8.45am. It was beside Maroa Rd, a rural metal road off State Highway 1.
The man's vehicle, a white Hyundai van, was parked at the intersection of Maroa Rd and SH1, a few hundred metres away.
A post mortem examination to establish the cause of death will be carried out tomorrow. In the meantime police are keeping an open mind about the discovery and treating the man's death as unexplained.
Initial inquiries suggested the man was travelling along SH1 towards Taupo between about 5pm and 6.30pm last night.
