A young Fijian woman found at the bottom of a Hamilton motel swimming pool has died.

Deepika Kumar, who had been living with an Anglican family in Wellington since December, was in Hamilton for the Christian music festival Parachute.

The 18-year-old was found in the pool at the Ulster St Motel on Saturday afternoon.

She died in Waikato Hospital last evening.

Anglican Church spokesperson Reverend Jayson Rhodes says her death will be felt by many in the community.

"She lived at St Christopher's Home in Suva, was cared for by the sisters there, and was to return to Fiji this coming week to begin university.

"Her death is just so tragic. It's a tragic accident.''

Jayson Rhodes says she was due to begin her teaching studies in Fiji.

"She was part of the parish of St Mary's in the Wellington suburb of Whitby. She was so much a part of that family and the family she was living with, that they'd invited her out here before starting university.'
