Man dies after Whangarei explosion

One of the men hurt in several explosions and a fire at a rural property near Whangarei last night continues to fight for his life.

The man, aged 49, was taken to Whangarei Hospital last night after emergency services were called to Opouteke Rd in Pakotai about 7.30pm.

A second man, aged 29, was also taken to hospital from the property. A Northland District Health spokeswoman confirmed the younger man was in a serious condition and awaiting transfer to Middlemore Hospital. The 49-year-old was in a critical condition, she said.

Police said this morning a clandestine laboratory team and fire safety investigators were carrying out a forensic examination at the property.

Emergency workers and neighbours who went to the scene last night were decontaminated. The area was also under guard overnight, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Whangarei police on 09 4304500.
