Run of fine weather to continue

Most of the country is in for another fine, dry weekend - although the outlook is not quite so rosy in the South.

A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea is keeping the country sunny and warm, but some cloudy and wet weather could hit the east coast.

All the main centres will see some sunshine, with temperatures in the mid to high 20s in some areas.

Only Christchurch and Dunedin could see some patches of drizzle tomorrow morning, clearing up later in the day, MetService said.

Auckland is in for a fine weekend, but it will be blustery tomorrow with pretty brisk southeasterly winds, said MetService meteorologist John Law.

"But that should ease off as we head through in towards Sunday, and both days are looking dry with some nice spells of sunshine," he said.

"All in all it's not a bad one."

Hamilton is a similar story, but could see some higher temperatures, hitting 27C in some areas.

"A bit of a blustery Saturday in store for Wellington, and with the winds being southerly we'll find we get a bit more cloud pushing in towards us as we head in towards the afternoon tomorrow as well," Mr Law said.

"Christchurch with the winds coming off the sea it's a case of Saturday's going to be more of a cloudy story to start off with, and a little bit of drizzle as well, not huge amounts just a bit of patchy morning stuff.

"It looks like a better, brighter day for Sunday, any early showers will soon clear away and winds easing off too. Dunedin is pretty much the same kind of idea."

However, he said weather watchers should "keep an eye on" a deep area of low pressure skirting around the north-eastern corner of the country.

"That is going to bring some cloudier, wetter weather into the likes of Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, along with some pretty gusty southeasterly winds," Mr Law said.

But he said "even those guys" will see an improvement on Sunday.

Main centres:

Dunedin - Cloudy periods and a chance of showers, with a northeast wind dying out, a high of 18C. A nicer day on Sunday, mainly fine with some morning cloud, and 19C.

Auckland - Fine with some southerlies tomorrow, a high of 24C. Sunday will be fine with a few cloudy periods and southeasterlies dying off, 25C

Hamilton - Fine with southerlies, and a high of 26C, while Sunday will be a sunny 27C.

Wellington - Expect some morning and evening cloud tomorrow, with strengthening southerly winds and a high of 19C. Sunday will be better, with cloudy periods but southerlies easing, and a high of 18C.

Christchurch - Patches of morning drizzle tomorrow, followed by fine spells and north-east breezes, a high of 20C. Sunday is mainly fine, a high of 21C, with a chance of an early shower.
