Chopper crashes near Clevedon

Two people have escaped uninjured after a helicopter crashed south-east of Auckland this afternoon.

Inspector Ian Brooker, of the police northern communications centre, said emergency services were called to the scene at the mouth of the Wairoa River, near Clevedon, about 1pm.

The helicopter had been on a training flight from nearby Ardmore Airport when it went down.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said it had ended up in mangroves.

Mr Brooker said the two people on board were not injured and were picked up by another helicopter and taken back to Ardmore.

It was unclear how the crash had occurred and the Civil Aviation Authority would be investigating.

An ambulance spokeswoman said they had been unable to get to the scene and paramedics were travelling to Ardmore to meet the two crew.
