One dead in crash

One person has died and four others are injured after a four car crash south of Hamilton.

The crash occurred around 4pm, near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Hautapu Rd, at Cambridge.

One person has died at the scene, northern ambulance communications shift manager Nicky Green said.

Of the four injured, one is serious, two have moderate injuries and one has sustained minor injuries, she said.

An initial assessment of the crash indicates a car towing a trailer and a van collided head on, causing two other cars to then be struck with wreckage and debris, police said.

Short diversions are in place around the scene and motorists are asked to take care on the narrower roads.

The serious crash unit will investigate, police said.

Emergency services are still at the scene.

It is understood there are some traffic delays.
