Driver flees police after fatal crash

The man who left a fatal crash scene in Auckland early this morning has been located by police.

A lone male occupant in one of the vehicles died following the fatal two-car collision in Chapel Rd, Flat Bush.

The driver of the second vehicle left the scene prior to police arriving.

One of the vehicles ended up on its roof and both vehicles sustained extensive damage in the crash, police said.

The fleeing driver was reported by witnesses to have been picked up by another vehicle. Police have now accompanied him to hospital.

An investigation into the cause of the crash was underway.

Chapel Rd was closed where it intersected with Ormiston to the south and Stancombe to the east, and diversions were in place.

Police estimated the road closure would be in place until around 11am.

Enquiries into identifying the dead man were also underway, and police and Victim Support would be advising his next of kin when completed.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area in their travels.
