Two people were arrested following a short pursuit after a firearm was pointed at residents of Wellington house, police say.
Police followed up a report from a member of the public just after 6pm, searching a Kilbirnie address and the surrounding area for an offender and female associate.
About an hour after the reported incident a car believed to be carrying the wanted pair was seen near the address, and was followed onto the Hutt Motorway by several armed police units.
A short pursuit took place when the vehicle failed to stop for police, and ended when it was spiked leaving the motorway onto Western Hutt Rd.
Police said both occupants were removed from the vehicle without incident.
A woman has been charged with driving offences, and a man with firearms and drugs charges.
Police would not say what type of firearm was involved.
